HMIS 101: What Is A Provider?

Providers are the heart of HMIS. Provider is the term used in HMIS that determines how to organize data into groups for data entry and reporting purposes. Understanding where to enter the client data is crucial to client confidentiality and correct reporting.

When an organization receives funding for a new type of project that requires HMIS participation, a new provider must be created. The organization must submit a New AKHMIS Project Request form to the AKHMIS Help Desk with necessary information to create the project in HMIS.

Interpreting a Provider Name in HMIS

The providers in AKHMIS (Alaska Homeless Management Information System) follow this naming convention:

Organization Name - Project Name [Funding Source] (Project Type)
